Definition of Democracy
While democracy
does not have a definitive definition,
the basis for membership in the UDN requires one. Since
representation is the basis of democracy, this organization will
constantly strive to refine the definition, recognizing that as mankind
advances, so will our expectations of democracy.
The working definition
begins as follows:
-
Leadership is by election of the
people, not inherited
or acquired by force. Elections must occur every decade at a minimum.
Elections must be fair and open.
The UDN is to monitor member nation elections to
validate legitimacy.
-
Freedom of speech.
-
Freedom of press.
Alternative viewpoints must be freely expressed without persecution.
-
Respect for human rights.
